Is it noticeably scarier? Will it be darker than the original? Does it still have funny moments? Did they make any changes? Did the chainsaw guy get new abilities? The answer is yes, but there's so much more to talk about. There is much more hope for Road Rash than we once suspected, and now that we've seen the PlayStation Road Rash Unchained, we can rest assured that it takes the rug out from under THQ's rather plain looking and playing Nintendo 64 version.Īfter playing through the original Resident Evil 4 dozens of times on everything from GameCube to Meta Quest 2 VR, Brian Altano got to go hands-on with the first 45 minutes of Capcom's highly anticipated next-gen remake of this modern classic of survival-horror action. And finally, sneaking a little feature from its sister game Need for Speed, Unchained enables players to play as the cop, enacting the law as he sees fit. Players in the gangs have different rankings, such as grunt, lieutenant and captain. Pitting two gangs against one another, each with distinguished weapons, attitudes, and moves, EA is paring down former flock of gangs to focus in on a new kind of tenrse rivalry. Super punches are even more powerful and will knock opponents off their bikes in highlighted animation sequences. By pressing a series of buttons players can attack with quick, successive moves. Now with combinations and super punches, the blend of racing and fighting should be evenly balanced for a genuinely renewed kind of gameplay. EA has "punched" up more intricate kinds of brawling that include mechanisms from real fighting games. The fighting is really where it's at in Road Rash Unchained. To accompany the several scenarios EA is in search of a number of bands, which it's filtering through right now to bring in the hardcore feel and mood of Road Rash Unchained. The three environments include Urban (traffic-filled city-scapes), Alpine (expert levels), and Desert (long, straight, uninterrupted roads that re great for fighting). Overall, the game builds on the streaming-from-the-disc gameplay as before, and branches from one scenario to another. Along with a two-player split-screen mode, PlayStation fans should get ready for some all-out walloping. One player drives and can perform some attacks from his side of the vehicle, and the other player is a complete road warrior, focused entirely on whacking the crap out of his opponents. There are now two multiplayer modes, one in which you and a friend form a cooperative team in a bike with a sidecar. Road Rash, the unabashed motorcycle racer that highlighted beating, clubbing and chain-slaying the rival riders on the Genesis, 3DO, and the Saturn, among other systems, is back with a new set of unusual features, many of which we're looking forward to.įirst off, EA is bringing back the two-player mode, which - for whatever reason - was not in last year's title. Due this fall, Road Rash Unchained should cure the common man's blues for a good Road Rash game on Sony's PlayStation in several ways. Salvaging last year's unpopular Road Rash 3D is no small task, but EA rarely gives up on a franchise, and it certainly isn't ready to throw the towel in on Road Rash. We'll have more on this Rash as soon as we get a more stable build in. The game is still in early-alpha stage, and does look rough at times right now, but it already plays fast and has plenty of action (you may notice in our videos that the fighting is not working too well - EA has hardly even implemented the fighting physics at this early 70% stage, and there is a lot of tweaking to be done before the game's upcoming release). Also new this year, you can take control of a donut-gnarling copper and tell some pig jokes to the boys whose skulls you have just cracked open with your nightstick. You are now not a lone rasher - you are part of a sadomasochistic gang looking to win races and battle rivals in an attempt to free your jailed buddy Spaz. This is the same game as Road Rash: Unchained, which we had previewed once long ago, but EA has gone back to the drawing boards on this one and reworked the story line and general lay-out of how the game works.
